What is the History of Molteni Cycling Team?

The Molteni cycling team was an Italian professional road cycling team that was active from 1958 to 1976. The team was sponsored by the Molteni meat-packing company, which was founded in 1890 in Arcore, Italy, and specialized in producing salami and ham.

The team was founded by team manager Ambrogio Binda and was initially composed of Italian riders. However, it soon became an international team, with riders from Belgium, France, the Netherlands, and other countries joining the team. The team was known for its distinctive orange jerseys with black sleeves and shorts, which became iconic in the world of cycling.

The team's most successful period was in the late 1960s and early 1970s when it was led by the Belgian rider Eddy Merckx. Merckx joined the team in 1971 and went on to win numerous races, including the Tour de France, Giro d'Italia, and the World Championship. He also set several world records and became one of the greatest cyclists of all time. Other notable riders who rode for Molteni include Gianni Motta, Herman Van Springel, and Marino Basso.

The Molteni team disbanded at the end of the 1976 season, but its legacy lives on in the world of cycling. The distinctive orange and black jersey is still worn by amateur and professional cyclists around the world, and the team's success in the 1960s and 1970s is still remembered as a golden age of cycling.
